The book was thick, and the words were small, and somewhere around the fourth chapter Victoria had quietly closed it and decided she simply wasn’t a good reader.
“The words are going out,” Oliver said gravely, turning a page that had once held a whole story and now held nothing at all. “A library is only as bright as the reading that happens inside it.”
Her voice wobbled on the long words. She stopped, started again, guessed, and got one wrong — but she kept going. And on the page in front of her, very faintly, a single word began to glow.
Reading isn’t a race, Victoria thought as the library blazed with light around her. It’s just one word, and then the next, and then the courage to turn the page.
