The night before the first day of school, Victoria lay in bed staring at the ceiling. Her backpack was ready. Her lunchbox was packed. Everything was ready — except her tummy. It felt full of butterflies.
Tap… tap… tap. There was Atlas, her giant emerald dragon, with a backpack almost as big as a car strapped to his back. “If it’s your first day of school,” he said proudly, “then it’s my first day too!”
“Even dragons get butterflies,” Atlas whispered. Then he placed a tiny golden feather in her hand. “It won’t do your homework. It only reminds you that you’re already brave.”
Brave people aren’t the ones who are never scared — they’re the ones who do new things even when they are. And by morning, Victoria’s butterflies had turned into butterflies of excitement.
